Adult Classes: Winter '09

Adult Series may be taken in any order and classes may be repeated.

Exploring the Stage, taught by Richard Leebrick
Course dates: Mondays, January 27 – March 16, 7-9pm
Tuition: $95
Our acting class for adults builds the skills needed to develop believable characters. Focus is on teaching the importance of acting instinctively and working within an ensemble while using the tools of the actor -- voice, body, and imagination -- through monologue and scene work. Learn the rules and vocabulary of improv, developing a toolkit that can be brought to acting roles, auditions, work life, and many other offstage interactions. Students are encouraged to build upon previous classes. Class limited, advanced registration encouraged.

Voice for the Actor, taught by Mary Unruh
Course dates: Sundays, January 26 – March 15, 7-8:30pm
Tuition: $110
Vocal technique is a must for all actors, and you can start building this skill at any time. This voice class will focus on unlocking the individual’s physical connection and commitment to language. Acting places athletic vocal demands on the actor. Through work on the text, the class will begin to develop the vocal flexibility, clarity and expressiveness needed to embody such structured texts. Insights and inspiration will be mainly drawn from Cicely Berry and Patsy Rodenburg.

Scene Study, taught by Fred Gorelick
Course dates: Sundays, January 25 – March 15, 4-6pm
Tuition: $110
Scene Study is the acting class where students take all of their technique and harness it for performance. It is a weekly workout where actors test their performance abilities in a safe and playful environment. Through working on scenes of various genres, the actors discover their strengths and weaknesses with the help of a trained director’s eye, giving the actor an opportunity to improve their craft. We are always looking to bring the actor to an instinctive, impulsive place. (Gorelick)

Note: This is not a beginning acting class. We require that a student applying for this class have prior training or performance experience.

Scriptwriting, taught by Tim McIntosh
Course dates: Tuesdays, Jan 20-Feb 17 & March 17, 7-9pm
Tuition: $110
The class combines theoretical principles, writing exercises, and practical advice toward the goal of mastering the crafts of screen- and stage-plays. The four primary topics are 1) plot, 2) character, 3) theme, and 4) dialogue. This class is for screenwriters and playwrights who want to start working on a script or work on a draft-in-progress.
The class will …

•    Analyze films and plays that work
•    Perform gripping dialogue
•    Write to "show" not "tell"
•    Learn how to format your script
During the course of the seminar, participants will write their own five-to-ten minute script. These scripts will be reviewed and critiqued. The winning author will receive an award on the last day of class.

Classes will be cozy and designed for plenty of interaction with the teacher and other students. We will read plays and watch movies that exemplify quality writing. (And, yes, we'll watch a scene or two that exemplify bad writing.)

The teacher, Tim McIntosh, is a screenwriter, playwright and actor. His most recent play, Søn of Abraham, received a Best New Play of 2008 award from the Chattanooga Theatre Centre. His screenplay Mandi was released in November by Kalon Media. Recent acting credits include  Manhattan Crack'r, Swamp Robber, and Lord Leebrick's upcoming production of Rabbit Hole (Feb. 2009).
