Shakespeare's R & J

by Joe Calarco

August 8 - 17 at 8pm
Matinees August 10 & 17 at 2pm

Joe Calarco's Shakespeare's R & J is a highly provocative re-imagining of Romeo & Juliet, in which four Catholic boarding school boys read, perform and eventually become all of the characters from the Bard's classic play. Shakespeare's powerful universal themes of love shake the foundations of the boys' sheltered world: rigidity, conformity, emotional distance and religious sexual repression; teaching the young men more than any school or religion ever could but can the Bard out-teach a generation's guilt and fear?

"Remarkably satisfying, even downright illuminating.... We also experience anew the pure joy of the text." - Alan Beck
